First Wednesdays: Crescendo Coffee Hour--in person!

Our monthly Crescendo Coffee Hours are a great way to network and meet colleagues! Each month we focus on a particular topic. In May we will be talking about saying goodbye to students. How do you end your relationship with a student? Maybe the student is graduating high school, or maybe they are choosing to stop taking lessons. Or maybe you would like to let them go as a student? How do we end our teacher/student relationships gracefully?

Teacher workshop on Zoom

Teacher workshop on Zoom

Starting to Improvise with Pentatonic Scales

offered by Erich Lieth

Instrumental improvisation is often thought of as the domain of the jazz elite - that it requires a lot of training, practice and natural talent. Obviously the need for practice can’t be avoided in any aspect of musicianship. However, satisfactory improvisation at its most basic level merely requires control of dissonance, and a few simple rules can achieve that. Pentatonic scales offer a possible approach to control dissonance, and students can begin using them as soon as they are able to understand and play triads. Furthermore, the study of how pentatonic scales interact with triads yields knowledge of basic music theory and introduces students to concepts that can be developed for use with more complex chords and scales. It also benefits composition and performance of composed music. This Zoom workshop will allow participants to explore these relationships at their own instrument, for their own enjoyment and to pass it on to their students. We will cover teaching the fundamentals (i.e. triads and pentatonics), exploring the use of single or multiple pentatonic scales for simple songs (like folk- or children’s songs), as well as tips on how to create interest and avoid ruts and pitfalls. There will be lots of hands-on opportunity to participate with muted microphones.

CHMTA Playathon

The CHMTA Play-a-Thon is Back!

Requirements: Students, spectators, and teachers must wear a mask while inside Southpoint at all times. The Play-a-Thon is a fundraiser for Musical Empowerment and participating students are asked to give a minimum $5 donation to their teachers for participating. Teachers will collect the donations from all participating students and turn in to Allison Flors on the day of the event. Cash, checks, or electronic payments can be arranged. Parents may also pay directly on the CHMTA website.

Music: Students are encouraged to play whatever they’d like and pieces do not need to be memorized! Holiday tunes are certainly encouraged. Please be courteous of time and plan on no more than 10 minutes per student and 45 minutes per studio participating. I will reach out if there is more time available.

Studio Sign Up Form: Teachers must complete this form in order to participate by Saturday, November 20th. Studios will find out their confirmed time of performance by Tuesday, November 22nd to share with families. Teachers may then place their individual students in order after getting their time slot.

Please email chapelhillmta@gmail.com with any questions.

Crescendo Coffee Hour

This month we will be holding our monthly coffee in person, outside! All music teachers are welcome as we check out a new venue—Namu Coffee Bar in Durham. Some of our members give this place rave reviews, and it has plenty of outdoor seating. Our monthly Crescendo Coffee Hours are a great way to network and meet colleagues. Each month we focus our discussion on a different topic chosen by our members. Our topic this month will be an important one—practicing! How do you motivate your students to practice? How do you teach them to practice? How much of a typical lesson time do you spend helping the students practice?

We can all grow as we share ideas and learn from each other.  Come connect with us, chat and network!
